About this tool

Large images are a common reason why web pages load slowly. Images straight from a camera or phone are often several megabytes and thousands of pixels wide — far more than a screen actually shows.

The tool reduces image size in two ways. The quality slider controls how heavily JPG and WebP are compressed. The maximum size reduces the longest side, which often saves the most space.

Images keep their original format unless you choose to save them as WebP. If an image doesn't get smaller when re-saved in the same format and size, the original is kept.

Everything happens in your browser. Images are not sent to any server.

Frequently asked questions

How large should images be on a website?

No larger than they're displayed. A full-width image can get by with 1920 pixels wide, and an image in a text column needs considerably less.

Why won't my PNG shrink?

PNG uses lossless compression, so the quality setting has no effect on the file. Reduce the dimensions or save as WebP to make it smaller.

Is EXIF data removed?

Yes. Camera information and GPS location are stripped from compressed images. The image is rotated correctly before being saved.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and images never leave your computer.
