Strength: approximately 130 bits of entropy. Very strong.
About this tool
A strong password is long and random. The generator creates passwords using your browser's cryptographic random number generator — the same kind used for encryption keys. Passwords are generated on your device and never sent anywhere.
Choose random characters when the password will be stored in a password manager. Length matters more than complexity: 16 characters with upper and lower case letters and numbers is far stronger than 8 characters with special characters.
Choose a passphrase when you need to remember the password or type it by hand, for example for your computer or password manager. Five random words are easy to remember and hard to guess, as long as the words are chosen randomly rather than by you.
Strength is shown in bits. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses required. Aim for at least 60 bits for everyday accounts and 80 or more for the most important ones, such as email and your password manager.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a password be?
At least 12 characters, ideally 16 or more. For a passphrase, five or six random words is enough. Length does more good than special characters.
Is it safe to generate passwords on a website?
Passwords here are generated in your browser using its cryptographic random number generator. Nothing is sent to us or stored. You can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and it will still work.
What is a passphrase?
A password made up of several random words, for example Pinecone-Snail7-Paintbrush-Compass. It is easy to remember and type but hard to guess, because there are so many possible combinations.
Should I use the same password in more than one place?
No. If a password leaks from one service, attackers will try it everywhere. Use a unique password for every account and store them in a password manager.
