About this tool

A sitemap is a list of the pages you want search engines to find. It usually lives at /sitemap.xml and is referenced in robots.txt. Large websites split it into multiple files using a sitemap index.

Enter a domain and the tool will first check robots.txt, then look for /sitemap.xml. You can also enter the address of a sitemap directly. The tool counts the URLs, shows the first 50, and follows up to five sitemaps in an index.

The tool warns about files that cannot be fetched, that are not valid XML, that contain more than 50,000 URLs, or that include URLs from a different domain. Once your sitemap is in order, submit it in Google Search Console.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sitemap?

Small sites with good internal linking often manage without one. A sitemap still makes it easier for Google to discover new and updated pages quickly.

How do I create a sitemap in WordPress?

WordPress generates one automatically at /wp-sitemap.xml. SEO plugins such as Yoast and Rank Math create their own, typically at /sitemap_index.xml.

Which pages should be included?

Only pages that should appear in Google and that return a 200 status. Leave out pages with noindex, redirects, or error pages.
