Forgot your WordPress password? Not to worry – it's easy to reset. This guide walks you through the steps to get a new password for your WordPress site.
Step 1 – Go to the login page
Open your browser and navigate to your WordPress login page. The address is usually:
- yourdomainname.com/wp-admin
- yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php
When the login form appears, click the Lost your password? link below the login fields.
Step 2 – Enter your username or email address
You'll now be taken to a page where you can request a password reset. Enter your username or the email address associated with your WordPress account in the field provided.
Then click the Get new password button.
💡 Tip: If you can't remember your username, try the email address you used when the account was created.
Step 3 – Check your email
WordPress will now send an email to the address registered on the account. The email contains a reset link that you click to create a new password.
💡 Tip: Can't find the email? Check your spam folder. It may take a minute or two to arrive.
Step 4 – Create a new password
When you click the link in the email, you'll be taken to a page where you can set a new password. WordPress automatically suggests a strong password – we recommend using it, or choosing your own that is at least 12 characters long and includes a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters.
Click Reset password to save your new password.
Step 5 – Log in with your new password
Go back to the login page (yourdomainname.com/wp-admin) and log in with your username and new password. You're now back inside your WordPress dashboard.
Still having trouble?
If you don't receive a reset email, or if the link doesn't work, it may be because the email address on the account is no longer active, or because your server is having trouble sending email.

Tips to avoid password problems
- Use a password manager – tools like Bitwarden or 1Password store your passwords securely so you never have to remember them.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – a plugin such as WP 2FA or Wordfence adds an extra layer of security to your WordPress account.
- Choose a strong, unique password – avoid reusing passwords from other services. A secure password protects your site against unauthorised access.
- Update your password regularly – change your password periodically, especially if you suspect it may have been compromised.
