Punycode converter
Convert domain names with å, ä and ö to punycode (xn--) and back.
About this tool
DNS only supports the letters a to z, digits and hyphens. Domain names containing å, ä, ö and other characters are therefore stored as punycode, an encoding that begins with xn--. For example, räksmörgås.se becomes xn--rksmrgs-5wao1o.se.
Browsers usually display the familiar name, but in DNS records, certificates, server configuration and email headers you sometimes need the punycode form. This tool converts in both directions.
Conversion happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
Frequently asked questions
Which form should I use in DNS records?
The punycode form — the one starting with xn--. Many DNS control panels convert automatically, but not all of them.
Does email work with domains containing å, ä and ö?
Partly. Many email clients and servers support it, but not all. An email address on a domain without those characters is safer for anyone trying to reach you.
Why does my browser sometimes show xn-- in the address bar?
Browsers display punycode when a name mixes characters from different writing systems, as a safeguard against spoofed addresses that resemble legitimate ones.
