Google Search Console is Google's free tool for website owners. It shows you which searches display your site, whether Google can find and index your pages, and whether anything is wrong. It's the first step if you want to improve your visibility on Google.
How to add your website
- Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with a Google account.
- Click Add property.
- Choose Domain and enter the domain name without https and www, for example mycompany.se. This covers all variations of the address at once.
- Google will show a TXT record starting with google-site-verification=. Copy the full value.
- Add the TXT record to your domain — see below.
- Go back to Search Console and click Verify.
Add the TXT record with Admax
If your DNS is with us, there are two ways to do it:
- Using Domain Assistant: open the domain under DNS in the customer portal, click Domain Assistant and paste the line from Google. Domain Assistant will suggest a record for you to approve. Read more in the Domain Assistant guide.
- Manually: add a record of type TXT with the name @ and the full value from Google. See Managing DNS records for your domain.
Don't remove any other TXT records on the domain, such as the SPF record for email. A domain can have multiple TXT records.
If Google says verification failed, it may be because the change hasn't propagated yet. Wait a while and try again. Read more in How long does it take for a DNS change to propagate?
What do I do next?
- Submit a sitemap so Google can find all your pages.
- Check under Performance after a few days to see which searches show your pages.
- Check under Pages to see if any pages aren't being indexed, and why.
Regardless of your publishing platform: domain-based verification works the same way for WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Wix, Squarespace and Shopify, as long as your domain's DNS is with Admax. If your DNS is elsewhere, add the TXT record there instead.
Leave the TXT record in place. If you remove it, you'll lose access to Search Console.
