Back to the knowledge base

Our web hosting runs on LiteSpeed Web Server. With the free LiteSpeed Cache plugin, the server stores ready-made versions of your pages so they load faster. Faster pages mean happier visitors and can improve your Google rankings.

WordPress: installing the plugin

  1. Log in to WordPress and go to Plugins and Add new.
  2. Search for LiteSpeed Cache. The plugin is made by LiteSpeed Technologies.
  3. Click Install now and then Activate.

Read more in How to install a plugin.

Getting started with presets

  1. Go to LiteSpeed Cache in the menu and select Presets.
  2. Choose Essentials or Basic and click Apply Preset.
  3. Open your site in a private window and check that everything looks and works as expected.

Start with a simple preset. The more aggressive ones also optimise CSS and JavaScript, which can interfere with certain themes and plugins.

Things to keep in mind

  • Use only one caching plugin. Deactivate WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, WP Rocket and similar plugins before activating LiteSpeed Cache.
  • Clear the cache after major changes. Use the button in the WordPress admin toolbar, under the LiteSpeed icon.
  • Online shop: the plugin recognises WooCommerce and does not cache the cart, checkout, or My Account pages.
  • If you run into problems after a change, deactivate the plugin and check whether the issue goes away.

More performance

How load times affect your Google ranking is covered in the post Core Web Vitals: how to fix your load times.

Caching in other publishing platforms

Joomla

  1. Download LiteSpeed Cache for Joomla from LiteSpeed's website or Joomla's extension directory.
  2. Install it under System, Install and Extensions.
  3. Go to System and Plugins, search for LiteSpeed Cache, and enable it.
  4. Disable Joomla's built-in page cache, the System - Page Cache plugin, to avoid two caches conflicting.

Drupal

  1. Install the LiteSpeed Cache module for Drupal and enable it under Extend.
  2. Disable the core Internal Page Cache module, as LiteSpeed takes over that role.
  3. Clear the cache under Configuration, Development and Performance after major changes.

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify

Caching and fast delivery are handled by each provider and cannot be configured. What you can influence is mainly image sizes and the number of apps and plugins.

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify run on their respective providers' own servers, not on web hosting. Menu names change from time to time, so search their help centres if you cannot find a setting.

Menus in Joomla and Drupal are usually the same in English and Swedish. If your control panel looks different, it may be due to the version you are using.
